How to Fish: Fish Not Biting — Second Island Rod and Bait Fix

No fish biting after reaching Island 2? Test the new rod's hold-left-click reel control, then separate a wrong lure from a co-op or session-specific bug.

Quick answer After the second-island rod enters the water, hold the left mouse button to reel or pull the hook instead of waiting with it motionless. Two independent Steam threads about Island 2 bait received this same community answer. If the control is correct, check the Forest lure pairing, confirm bait is actually equipped, then compare solo and co-op before calling every bait broken.

The Island 2 rod needs an active reel input

The newest report is very specific: fish bit normally on Island 1, stopped after the player acquired a new fishing setup on Island 2, while a friend in the same session could still catch fish. The only reply says to hold left click while the hook is in the water.

An older thread titled “only 1 bait works on 2nd island” received a matching answer: the new rod has to be reeled in by holding left click. That repeated explanation makes the control check the best first step, but it remains a community answer rather than an official patch note.

  1. Equip the intended rod and lure. Confirm both are visible in the active slot before casting.
  2. Cast into occupied water. Use a spot where a co-op partner or the Fish database confirms the target creature can appear.
  3. Hold left mouse after the hook lands. Keep the input held so the new rod reels or pulls through the water.
  4. Watch for movement and engagement. A moving hook and an active catch response are different from a stationary line that never reaches a creature.
  5. Repeat with one ordinary lure. Do not spend boss bait while diagnosing the basic control.
Do not wait forever on a stationary hookThe second-island reports are easy to misread as “all bait is broken.” First prove the hook is being reeled. If it is moving correctly and still receives no response, continue with the checks below.

Is this a bait problem or a rod-input problem?

Check the correct Island 2 lure tier

The Forest does not use one universal bait for every creature. The current cross-referenced database includes ordinary Island 2 catches across Free Lure, Beginner Lure and Hot Dog routes, while the Giant Piranha uses the Modified Leech boss trigger. A boss item should not be used to test whether ordinary fishing works.

  • Search the Fish, Lures & Fishipedia tracker for the creature name or “Forest.”
  • Confirm the lure is equipped on the same active rod you cast.
  • Use ordinary bait for the test and keep the Modified Leech for the boss route.
  • Try a known Island 1 pairing again only as a control. If it works there, the rod input and Island 2 pairing deserve separate checks.
  • Do not assume a rare Drip variant needs a special lure; current guides route it through the normal creature pairing.

Your friend can catch fish, but you cannot

That comparison is useful because it shows the water and session can produce catches for at least one player. It does not prove whether the remaining difference is equipment, input, player state or co-op synchronization.

  1. Stand beside the working player. Use the same general water area.
  2. Match an ordinary lure. Do not compare different creature targets.
  3. Re-equip your rod and lure. Switch to another slot and back, then confirm the held item.
  4. Use the hold-left-click reel control. Ask the other player to confirm when their input begins.
  5. Test solo once. Save through the game menu, return to Main Menu and open a clean local session. If solo works, record the host and lobby difference.
  6. Rebuild the lobby only after the comparison. Avoid changing host, lure and rod simultaneously.

Nothing bites after the control and lure checks

  • Restart Steam and confirm all players use the current official build.
  • Remove mods or input remappers from one clean test.
  • Run Steam’s installed-file check once if the rod animation or input appears broken.
  • Check whether another mouse action is also failing; a high polling-rate or binding issue belongs in the mouse-stutter guide.
  • If equipment is missing or falls through the map, stop treating it as a lure question and use the save and equipment guide.

No official Patch 1.0.9 note identifies a global “fish never bite” fix. A useful report must show that the hook was actively reeled, the lure was documented for that island and the result differed between solo or co-op.

No-bite report checklist

  • Island and exact water area.
  • Rod and lure names shown in the active slot.
  • Whether left click was held after the hook entered the water.
  • Whether the hook visibly moved.
  • Solo, host or joining player.
  • Whether another player could catch in the same area with the same pairing.
  • Whether the same rod still catches on Island 1.
  • Current game version and any input remapper or mod.
