How to Beat the Pufferfish Boss

Prepare for the How to Fish Pufferfish boss, keep the quest trophy and troubleshoot a meat-only drop or missing coordinates without overwriting your save.

Quick answer Patch 1.0.4 nerfed Pufferfish, but terrain remains the practical plan: use cover, fire while the boss reroutes and keep moving. After the kill, preserve the distinct quest trophy. A meat-only drop is a reported progression blocker; the official notes checked through 1.0.12 do not announce a guaranteed missing-trophy recovery.

Why did Pufferfish leave?

If the fight HUD shows a second white bar beneath the health bar, read it as the encounter’s escape timer. Damage reduces the health bar; time drains the white bar. If that timer empties before the kill is recorded, the boss leaves or the encounter resets.

HUD signalWhat it meansResponse
Boss health remains, white bar is fallingThe fight is still active but the escape window is shrinkingKeep using safe damage windows instead of extending the kite indefinitely
Countdown appears near the endThe current attempt is about to expireCommit only to damage you can land without dying or losing control of the arena
Boss vanishes without a kill resultThe encounter ended; it was not a successful defeatObtain another Carrot and resummon Pufferfish.
  • Buy ammunition, healing and upgrades before spending the boss trigger.
  • Use cover to create shots, not to run without dealing damage for the entire fight.
  • Keep the boss visible so a reset is not confused with a kill or progression bug.
No universal seconds publishedCurrent guides agree on the white-bar function, but Dazed Games has not published one duration that can safely be applied to every boss, difficulty, lobby and build.

Why the pufferfish is a wall

Launch-day players consistently described the Pufferfish as extremely fast, durable and capable of ending an attempt quickly. Official Patch 1.0.4 then nerfed the boss. The patch does not publish new health or speed values, so current positioning matters more than copying an old damage claim.

The boss’s large body and increasing size can also work in your favor: terrain that barely interrupts a smaller creature can disrupt the pufferfish’s route. Players report that it may get caught more often as the fight progresses, but the behavior is physics-dependent and should not be treated as a guaranteed lock.

Build a route before the first shot

  1. Identify two pieces of cover. Trees or solid props should let you circle without entering a dead end.
  2. Clear your escape path. Small props and shoreline angles can turn a clean loop into a collision.
  3. Start near the outside of the route. Do not summon or engage while boxed between the boss and water.
  4. Let terrain create the firing window. Shoot when the boss is rerouting, then move before it closes the gap.
  5. Keep the loop boring. A repeatable circle is safer than improvising a new direction on every pass.

Solo approach

Enter with a weapon whose timing you already understand. The important stat is not an unpublished damage number; it is whether you can fire and return to movement inside the gap you create. Preserve ammunition for clean windows and avoid reloading while standing in the open.

If the pufferfish catches you on the same corner repeatedly, change the route—not just the weapon. A wider circle can reduce abrupt turns, while a tighter route may cause the large body to interact with cover more often. Test one change at a time so you can tell which pattern is surviving longer.

Co-op roles

Community advice is clearest in co-op: the targeted player runs circles while the others fire. Spread shooters around the arena so the boss does not pass through the whole team on one charge. Call out an aggro change immediately; the previous runner should stop crossing the new runner’s route.

Post-patch noteCurrent attempts run after the 1.0.4 nerf, but no tactic works identically in every physics interaction. Terrain and team roles improve the attempt; they do not promise a zero-risk kill.

Keep the fin/trophy after the kill

Do not hand the next quest giver ordinary pufferfish meat chunks. Players report that the progression item is the distinct half-piece or fin/trophy with a visible bone-like shape. Pick it up, keep it in the relevant player’s inventory and return it before selling or eating other parts.

The September 1 Steam discussion, reviewed by this wiki on September 2 describes a kill without new coordinates. A reply asks whether the head was given to the seated beach quest giver; the author says only meat dropped. The thread supplies a useful symptom, but no successful recovery.

Only meat dropped: no head, trophy or new coordinates

Separate a missed hand-in from an absent item. Calling every remaining part “meat” can hide the real issue, while repeating the hand-in cannot replace a trophy that is genuinely missing. These checks help classify the failure; they are not a proven forced-drop method.

  1. Read the quest again. Note its exact objective and whether new coordinates have already appeared. Compare the island progression guide before buying another trigger.
  2. Inspect the loot and each player's inventory. Have the host and guests compare what they can see. A trophy held by another player, a visible uncollected part and no visible trophy are different observations.
  3. Do not sell the remaining pieces during diagnosis. Record the item names and the location of the fight. Keep any distinct quest item available for the hand-in.
  4. Preserve the save before reload experiments. Follow the backup-first save guide. Do not delete the campaign, edit the only copy or repeatedly overwrite an older working state.
  5. Check the installed version, then report the exact symptom. The newest official announcement verified on September 23 is Patch 1.0.12. Include host or guest role, mods, quest text, dropped item names and a screenshot when reporting the issue.
No confirmed replacement or forced dropThe official notes checked through Patch 1.0.12 do not name a Pufferfish trophy-recovery command or guaranteed fix. The 1.0.12 item-velocity limit is mitigation, not proof that it restores a lost trophy. Resummoning a boss after its escape timer and recovering a missing post-kill trophy are also different cases.

If you are still getting one-shot

  • Stop spending attempts until you have a route that avoids the first few charges.
  • Check whether travel or weapon purchases emptied the cash needed for supplies.
  • Use co-op players at different angles rather than stacking behind the same tree.
  • Watch a current gameplay run to compare arena position, not just the final loadout.
  • Check current developer notes in case launch balance has changed since this page’s update date.
