How to Fish Difficulty Settings: Easy, Normal & Hard Mode

Compare Easy, Normal and Hard in How to Fish, see the exact Patch 1.0.9 health and damage changes, and switch mode before a difficult boss.

Quick answer Patch 1.0.9 added Easy and Hard alongside the original Normal tuning. Easy gives every creature 25% less health and 50% less damage. Hard gives every creature 25% more health and 25% more damage. The official announcement says you can change the setting from the main menu or in-game.

Easy vs Normal vs Hard values

ModeCreature healthCreature damageBest fit
Easy25% less50% lessSolo progression, learning a boss or recovering momentum after repeated wipes
NormalOriginal valueOriginal valueThe same default balance used before Patch 1.0.9
Hard25% more25% moreA tougher repeat run after your route and loadout are already stable

These percentages come directly from Dazed Games’ Patch 1.0.9 announcement. They apply to all creatures, so the change is relevant to ordinary catches, mini-bosses and story bosses. The patch does not publish separate per-boss exceptions.

How to change difficulty

  1. Update and restart Steam. The difficulty selector was added in Patch 1.0.9, so an older build will not show it.
  2. Open the difficulty setting. Dazed Games says it is available from both the main menu and in-game.
  3. Choose Easy, Normal or Hard. Normal preserves the previous default tuning.
  4. Confirm the displayed mode before using a rare boss bait. This avoids spending a one-off trigger while the wrong setting is active.
  5. In co-op, tell the group which mode is shown. The official note does not explain host-versus-client ownership, so align the lobby before testing a boss.
Official boundaryThe patch confirms where the option exists and gives the exact health/damage modifiers. It does not publish hidden enemy stats, boss-specific overrides or a player-count scaling formula.

Which difficulty should you use for bosses?

Use Easy when the fight—not the bait or quest trigger—is the blocker. A smaller health pool shortens the time you must survive, while the larger damage reduction gives solo players more room to learn a charge, jump or area attack. This is especially useful for Giant Piranha, Pufferfish and the Mutated Bowhead Whale.

Difficulty does not replace encounter setup. You still need the correct lure or quest item, a clear movement route, healing, ammunition and the boss trophy after the kill. If a boss never appears, check the trigger before changing the mode again.

Fast decisionChoose Easy to learn or clear a wall, Normal for the original balance, and Hard only when the route already feels controlled. There is no benefit in spending a rare trigger on Hard merely to test whether the option works.

Difficulty is not the same as player-count scaling

Players are separately asking whether boss health changes with the number of people in a lobby. Patch 1.0.9 documents Easy/Normal/Hard modifiers, but it does not provide a multiplayer scaling formula. Do not assume that four or eight players multiply boss health by a fixed amount.

For a clean comparison, keep the same lobby size and change only the difficulty. If you change both player count and mode at once, the result cannot answer the scaling question.

Does Easy Mode disable achievements?

The official Patch 1.0.9 note does not say that Easy disables Steam achievements, nor does it promise that every achievement is unaffected. Until Dazed Games publishes a rule, do not present either outcome as confirmed. If a specific unlock matters, check its in-game wording, meet the stated condition exactly and record the selected difficulty when reporting a problem.

Difficulty FAQ

Is Normal the old difficulty?

Yes. Dazed Games describes the default as the same setting used before 1.0.9.

Can I switch after starting a save?

Yes. The announcement explicitly says the option is available in-game as well as from the main menu.

Does Easy change lure requirements?

No lure changes are listed in 1.0.9. Follow the same quest, island and bait requirements while using the easier combat values.
