How new islands unlock
The Steam description sets the broad rule: quests and bosses unlock new islands. In practice, the campaign is less about catching a fixed number of fish and more about completing the active island’s request, defeating the creature it points toward and returning the correct result.
Before leaving an island, talk to the visible quest characters, inspect your objective text and note which item is being requested. Once a boss is dead, pick up every distinct drop and keep the unusual trophy piece separate until the quest response changes.
The boss hand-in rule
| Encounter or task | What players report the quest wants | What causes confusion |
|---|---|---|
| Early lighthouse-area boss | The encounter’s distinctive trophy/drop | Players may focus on edible pieces after the fight. |
| Piranha progression | A distinct piranha trophy, described as a skull or tail | Generic meat chunks do not complete the hand-in. |
| Pufferfish progression | The fin/trophy piece with a visible bone-like shape | Meat chunks from the boss look important but are not the requested item. |
Those descriptive names come from launch-day players and can differ from the exact inventory label. Use the item’s distinct shape and the quest giver’s response as your guide.
Second-island checklist
- Talk to the local characters. Do this before using a boss lure so the correct objective is active.
- Collect five leeches from the island floor. They are tied to the farmer-type NPC and are easy to miss against the ground.
- Prepare for the piranha-related hand-in. When the boss drops multiple parts, preserve the trophy-shaped piece.
- Return to the quest giver before selling. If the hand-in fails, inspect the remaining items rather than grinding another boss immediately.
Third-island progression signals
Steam discussions point to two useful details. First, the “endangered fish” objective appears to react to a horse- or needle-shaped fish, based on player descriptions. Second, after the pufferfish fight, the required hand-in is the distinct fin/trophy rather than its ordinary meat chunks.
Players also report that a tablet can be purchased and that a radar upgrade is available on the third island. Treat the radar as a navigation and search-time upgrade; it does not replace reading the quest or preserving boss drops.
If the next step does not trigger
- Return to every active quest giver on the current island with the trophy still in inventory.
- Compare the unusual trophy part with any generic meat chunks; try the distinct item first.
- Check whether the objective asks for a creature, boss result, food item or NPC interaction rather than an island unlock directly.
- In co-op, confirm which player collected the item and whether that player is present for the hand-in.
- If a required world item did not spawn, do not assume more boating will fix it; preserve the session state and consult current developer/community reports.
